Partitives and Measure Expressions
What are partitives?
Partitives allow you to count or portion uncountable nouns by introducing a countable container, unit, or piece. They transform abstract or bulk nouns into measurable quantities.
Structure and Formation
Partitives follow this pattern:
countable noun + of + uncountable noun
Examples:
- “a piece of advice” — converts the uncountable noun “advice” into a countable unit
- “a slice of bread” — specifies a portion of the uncountable noun “bread”
- “a cup of coffee” — uses a container to measure the uncountable noun “coffee”
- “a bottle of water” — uses a container to quantify the uncountable noun “water”
Common Partitive Expressions

- Portions and pieces:
a slice of, a piece of, a chunk of, a spoonful of, a handful of
- Abstract units:

Combining Quantifiers with Partitives
Once a partitive establishes a countable unit, you can apply quantifiers:
- “Plenty of slices” — quantifies the countable unit “slices”
- “Several bottles” — specifies an indefinite moderate amount of containers
- “Most of the cake” — partitive creates countable reference; quantifier specifies the majority
- “A few cups of tea” — combines quantifier with partitive
- “Too many pieces of information” — emphasizes excess of countable units
In summary, partitives identify the units being counted from a whole, while quantifiers specify how many or how much of those units are present.
Verb Agreement with Partitives
The verb agrees with the partitive noun (the countable unit), not the original uncountable noun:
- “A slice of bread is enough” — singular verb (singular partitive: “slice”)
- “Three slices of bread are enough” — plural verb (plural partitive: “slices”)
- “A cup of coffee was spilled” — singular verb (singular partitive: “cup”)
- “Several cups of coffee were ordered” — plural verb (plural partitive: “cups”)
